Our Ticks of Yum

Hot Toddy-ish - Adults Only

Posted by Bee & John on July 12, 2013 at 1:10 AM

I woke up this morning to a mind numbing cold... head thumping, throat sore, nose running.... you know what I mean.

In my stupour I was flicking through Pinterest and found a "recipe" for cough and cold syrup - mnnnrrrr... sounded a bit disgusting BUT for some reason my body was going YES!  The recipe was 1/4 teaspoon each of ground ginger and cayenne, 1 tablespoon each honey and water and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.... shake like mad... 1 tablespoon at a time.

The comments for the post kept referring to an old remedy similar to that, which contained bourbon... my mind kept ticking and I shot up and made a drink (that to be honest, I was expecting to throw awa)y... but I absolutely LOVE it!!!  I can honestly say it is making my throat feel better and me too!  The surprising thing is... I DON"T DRINK!  I have nothing against alcohol but just not that into it.... but this drink is FAB - it isn't that alcoholic and I do wonder if it is necessary..... but it is an antiseptic too right?

I might also point out I have NO idea what is in a hot toddy... it just seemed like a good name for a hot alcohol-ish type cold remedy

  • 2cm square cube of ginger (more or less as needed)
    • chop in Thermomix for 3-4 seconds on speed 7
  • 200ml of water - use it to wash ginger from sides of bowl
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey
  • pinch of cayenne pepper (more if preferred)
  • juice of one lemon
  • 1-2 tablespoons of... (we only had bundy rum - guess whatever you have or leave it out)

Cook for 6 mintues on speed 1, 90oC.
Strain through a tea strainer and drink
Feel better

OF COURSE do not give to kids!!  Not with the alcohol in it anyway - everything else ok
